(some) Favorite DVD/VHS/Blu-Ray purchases of 2011

Silent Naruse

This box-set from Eclipse is one of the most important DVD releases of 2011. While there are endless Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa releases, Naruse's oeuvre has been highly neglected (before this box-set the only other Naruse film on region 1 DVD was When a Woman Ascends the Stairs). His works are also much less known here in the West than of his Japanese contemporaries. The five films collected in this box-set showcase his magnificent studies of women and their continued struggle as well as his unmistakable brilliant craftsmanship. Some of the most brilliantly photographed and edited films of all-time, this set should be considered a holy grail in every DVD connoisseur's library.

This old New Yorker VHS is perfect for the grainy, harsh look of this film (shot in 16mm but blown-up to 35mm). One of my favorite films of all-time that couldn't seem more relevant today. I feel honored to have found this VHS and plan on showing it to as many people as I can before the actual film on the tape wears out.

Perhaps the best Blu-Ray available in any region, this set of previously hard-to-find films gets the treatment it deserves from Criterion. The best way to describe the Vigo films is as perfect because that is the first thought I have in my mind after watching any of his films, an effect not limited to me.

This trio of short films are among my favorite discoveries of 2011. Highly recommended for fans of The 400 Blows.

I finally got around to getting this Blu-Ray and the 70+ minute interview with John Ford for the BBC is one of the best interviews of all-time... Plus you get Stagecoach in as close as 35mm quality you're bound to get!
